These dead lodgepole pines are remnants from the fire of 1988. Now, more than 20 years after the fire, the forest is still in the earliest stages of regeneration. To add to the ghostly appearance of this scene, there was a little snow falling.
We were told that, before the fire, moose were common in Yellowstone, but without trees to browse, this was no longer the case.
